Outdoor Activities Training

For all volunteers, young leaders and external young volunteers
Cost £25 (legitimate unit expense)

Sessions on offer -
*Firestarter! [All sections]
Learning different styles of fire lighting for different environments. Risk assessments. All aspects of fire management from collecting the right wood/materials to maintaining and extinguishing safely.

*Exploring the Great Outdoors! [Rainbows & Brownies]
Getting outdoors, landmarks, countryside code, compass points, grid refs, footcare.

*Rope Adventures [All sections]
How to make rope swings, ladders, walks, bridges and courses. Have fun outdoors with your unit

*Orienteering [All sections]
This taster session will teach the basics of orienteering using bespoke games

*Demystifying Backwood cooking (outdoor cooking) [All sections]
You don’t need a big space to cook outside, come and learn different methods of outdoor cooking.

*Survival Skills [Guides & Rangers]
Making water safe to drink, making a shelter, distress signals and scenarios.

*Bug Hunting & bug homes [Rainbows/Brownies/Guides]
Habitat search, how to use sweep nets and pots. Making simple bug hotels using either brought resources or natural materials

*Have a Go Archery [Brownies/Guides/Rangers]
Try your hand at archery with our experienced County trainers.

*Exploring the Great Outdoors! [Guides & Rangers]
Finding your way, understanding maps & symbols, night navigation, using plants/trees to navigate, photo trail

*Camp Gadgets [Brownies/Guides/Rangers]
Learn basic knots and how to put them to good use making camp gadgets. Learn basic whittling.

*Carry on Camping! [Guides & Rangers]
How to put up, look after/maintain a tent. How to set up a campsite. Alternatives to tent camping – bivvy & shelters

* Bird watching & bird feeders [Rainbows/Brownies/Guides]
Bird bingo/scavenger hunt, variety of bird feeders. Mindfulness moment – listen to bird song

*Campfire singing [all sections]
Variety of song types ie say & repeat, rounds, actions, new & old

Morning and afternoon canoeing sessions for Brownies aged 9+, Guides, Rangers and volunteers will be held on the following dates at Papermill Lock.

Risk assessments

Risk Assessments will be needed for each event, travel to/from the event and activities during the event. They help you look at an event from all angles and imagine ‘what if’ scenarios. They are working documents that are updated throughout the planning process.
